Super-Cat in “Off to the Moon or Bust!”
Have you ever read those amazing Super Mouse comics by Milt Stein? Well, these Super-Cat comics are nothing like those. They’re clumsily drawn and the story is so stupid that it’s charming.
OK…to be fair, this Super-Cat is really just a parody place-holder than a real character like Super Mouse was. Super-Cat’s total obliviousness is kinda fun…
I’m just fascinated by the clunky off-kilter low-rent second-string execution of this story. The first three panels are so incredibly dopey that I was hooked right away

I love collecting old "How to Draw Cartoons" books, and this one is among my favorites: "Popeye's How to Draw Cartoons" by Joe Musial from 1939. I finally got a giant scanner, so now I can share this really fun vintage cartooning book!

Dan Gordon -- one of the greatest cartoonists ever!
Here are some amazing funny animal comics by Dan Gordon. These are from the ACG comic, Funny Films #1 from September, 1949.
The opening story features Puss & Boots in a hilarious cat-vs-dog comedy that transcends the cliches of the genre because of the absolute unbridled mayhem and unapologetic violence-for-the-gag's-sake. You can practically hear all the great sound effects of hammers hitting heads! And most of all...LOOK at those DRAWINGS!
In the second story, meet Blunderbunny...a rabbit inventor whose creations always go wrong...
Another Puss & Boots burlesque follows, and it's one of my favorites!
...and one more Blunderbunny story wraps up the issue!
I have compiled all four Dan Gordon stories from this issue into one PDF file which you can download HERE.

SpongeBob Premiere Promo Postcard 1999
Another buried treasure uncovered from the box at the bottom of the closet: A promotional postcard promoting the series premiere of SpongeBob SquarePants on July 17, 1999 (although there was one sneak episode released earlier in May of '99.) SpongeBob's design matured a lot over the first few seasons. I drew this image during the first season, but it sure looks wonky to me now!
